When to Drain Your Water Heater & Why it Matters, Hamilton

As the vibrant colours of autumn sweep across Hamilton and surrounding communities like Ancaster, Dundas, and Burlington, many of us turn our thoughts to preparing our homes for the cooler months ahead. While furnace checks and gutter cleaning are often top of mind, there’s another essential task that often gets overlooked: draining your water heater.

At Water Heaters R Us, we understand that your hot water supply is vital, especially when the Ontario chill sets in. That’s why we’re here to explain why draining your water heater is so important, when you should do it, and how this simple maintenance step can save you money and headaches in the long run.

Why Draining Your Water Heater is Non-Negotiable

Your water heater works tirelessly day in and day out, providing hot water for showers, laundry, and dishes. But beneath the surface, a silent culprit can be severely impacting its performance and lifespan: sediment buildup.

The Silent Threat: Sediment Buildup

The water flowing into your Hamilton home, particularly in areas known for hard water like much of Ontario, contains dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. While generally safe to drink, these minerals don't simply disappear when water is heated. Instead, they precipitate out, forming a gritty, scale-like substance that settles at the bottom of your water heater tank. This is what we call sediment.

What Sediment Does to Your Water Heater:

When is the Best Time to Drain Your Water Heater?

For most Hamilton homeowners, a good rule of thumb is to drain your water heater at least once a year. However, the frequency can depend on several factors, primarily the hardness of your local water supply.

How to Drain Your Water Heater Tank (A Basic Overview)

While we always recommend professional service for complex issues, understanding the basic steps of draining your water heater can empower you to perform this task or at least know what to expect from a technician.

Disclaimer: If you are unsure or uncomfortable performing any of these steps, please contact a qualified plumbing professional. Working with water heaters involves electricity and/or natural gas, which can be dangerous if not handled properly.

How to Drain Your Water Heater Tank

  1. Turn Off Power/Gas: For electric water heaters, switch off the circuit breaker. For gas heaters, turn the gas valve to the 'pilot' setting or completely off. This is a crucial safety step.
  2. Turn Off Cold Water Supply: Locate the cold water inlet valve at the top of your water heater and turn it off. This prevents new water from entering the tank.
  3. Connect Hose: Attach a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of your water heater. Extend the other end of the hose to a floor drain, utility sink, or outside where hot water can safely drain.
  4. Open Hot Water Faucet: Open a hot water faucet in your home (e.g., in a bathroom or kitchen sink). This breaks the vacuum inside the tank and allows the water to drain freely.
  5. Open Drain Valve: Carefully open the drain valve on the water heater. You'll likely see cloudy, discoloured water at first – that's the sediment!
  6. Flush (Optional): If the water flow slows significantly or remains very cloudy, briefly open the cold water supply valve for a few seconds (with the drain valve still open). This can stir up and help flush out stubborn sediment. Close the cold water supply again.
  7. Close Drain Valve & Remove Hose: Once the water runs clear, close the drain valve completely and remove the garden hose.
  8. Refill Tank & Restore Power: Close the hot water faucet you opened earlier. Then, slowly open the cold water supply valve to refill the tank. Listen for the sound of water filling. Once water flows steadily from a hot water faucet, the tank is full. Now you can safely restore power/gas to your unit.
